Massive structures of
concrete and steel, such as the Ohr-O'keefe Museum, were no match for
Hurricane Katrina. From Point Cadet in Biloxi to Waveland the Mississippi coast
resembled a war zone. This storm took away precious lives, homes of family and friends, churches, favorite restaurants, businesses and many
historic landmarks. The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum, designed by world famous architect Frank Gehry was partially destroyed by Hurricane Katrina August 29, 2005. The Museum, which was in it's final construction phase, was named after George Ohr (The Mad Potter of Biloxi) and the museum's benefactor Jerry O'Keefe. The museum, located on East Beach Boulevard in Biloxi, was to be home to a extensive collection of Ohr's work. Known as "the father of
American pottery" his work is recognized worldwide by the art community as both
eccentric and genius.
