Shrimping

The image
above was made on opening day of shrimp season south of Pascagoula,
Mississippi. Due the waves and salt spray I used a manual 23 yr old Pentax
ME Super, 50mm lens 1.7, Fuji NPH film ISO 400 speed film, set at 250th of
a second at F16.
| The
business of shrimping on the Mississippi Gulf Coast use to be a
family business where fathers, sons and even grandsons learned and
practiced the trade. As one generation retired the boat and trade was passed on
to the next generation. Two years ago Hurricane Katrina not only
devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast but severely weakened an
already struggling shrimping industry. Today the cost of fuel, labor, restrictions
and the dumping of foreign shrimp on US Markets has almost
decimated these family owned businesses. Although the fresh water
shrimp (Prawns) market is in the infant stage this may also
represent a potential threat in future years. How can you help this
struggling Mississippi industry? "Ask for and buy Mississippi Harvested
Shrimp". |
